Micron Technology has announced that it will discontinue its consumer memory business — including its well-known Crucial-branded RAM and SSD products — by February 2026. The company is making a strategic shift toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM), the advanced chip technology used in AI data centers, enterprise cloud systems, and industrial-grade AI applications.

This move comes amid soaring global demand for AI-ready hardware, where HBM components have become essential for powering large language models, deep-learning workloads, and high-performance computing environments. Micron will continue shipping Crucial products until early 2026 and will honor warranties, but it will no longer develop new consumer-focused memory products.

The shift reflects a broader industry trend. Major chip manufacturers are moving away from lower-margin consumer markets and doubling down on AI infrastructure. For everyday PC users, this could mean limited product availability and potential price increases. For the AI ecosystem, it marks another sign that the semiconductor industry is prioritizing advanced memory solutions to support next-generation AI growth.
